Through These Doors

Welcome!
Through These Doors
you will find the new gorilla habitat
in the African Forest at the Houston Zoo.

Entry Into The Main Room of the Gorilla Habitat

You enter the main room.
 Walls with art.

Art Collage

Walls with glass overlooking the exhibit
where the gorillas and red river hogs live.
The Houston Zoo's gorillas
are all western lowland gorillas.
All of them were born and raised in American zoos.

The Red River hogs are named for their striking red hair
and their ability to wade and swim in rivers.
The long white tufts on the tips of their ears are called tassels.

Gorilla and Red River Hogs

You will also find pictures that tell the story of the gorillas
along with descriptions of all of them.

Chaka and Mike

And on this special day,
part of the welcoming committee,
a little human dressed like a chimp.

Hooman ???!!!

You can read more about the
Gorillas at the Houston Zoo here.

Cool! I don't think I've ever seen a red river hog before.

I liked seeing the descriptions of the gorillas. Each does have a distinctive look and personality. Your zoo always looks fantastic.

Red River Hog is a new one for me - a lovely and somewhat different animal. What is there to say about a gorilla except - magnificent animal?

A good place to see critters that you would not be yourself in far able to see for off places. Have a lovely weekend.

Zoos have come along way since I was a kid, when they were just jails for animals.

Thanks for the pictures!

The Houston zoo exhibits when I was a child were mostly just cages, though I remember the seals having a large pool surrounded by a fence where my sister managed to cut her knee on the metal. I'm glad to hear they are buiding natural exhibits for the animals. The red river hogs are really cute, I love the color and the facial markings that look a little like a mask.

Sounds like an interesting zoo. I've never seen (or heard of) a red river hog. How fun to have those signs to tell people which gorilla is who and how to tell them apart.

I tried leaving a comment earlier but the publish button wouldn't work so I'll try again.
These gorillas look like they're well cared for as are the other animals at the zoo you share on FB.
Did they get to see the 'Planet of the Apes' person - wonder what their reaction would be? :-)
Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday Sharon.

It looks like good habitat. And zoos and care of these amazing animals has certainly improved over the (many) decades I've been alive. I just hope their cousins still in the wild can survive.
