I'll Be One of Those In Line

Welcome to October!

I love October.
It means, with a little luck, the 90 degree days and high humidity
will be fewer and farther apart and maybe we will see 60 degree mornings.
Relief!

Sunflowers

Here's a little information about my favorite month:

October's birth flowers are the cosmos and the calendula or marigold.
Cosmos is a symbol of joy in life and love and of peace.
The calendula (aka garden, English, or pot marigold) represents
winning grace, grief, or chagrin in the language of flowers.

The October birthstone is the opal, which symbolizes faithfulness and confidence.

October Holidays:

October 9 is Leif Eriksson Day.
October 10 is Columbus Day in the U.S., which is always observed on the second Monday in October.
October 10 also brings Thanksgiving for my Canadian friends.
Wrapping up the month is Halloween (All Hallows Eve) on October 313st.

October's full Moon, the Fall Hunter's Moon, occurs on the 16th.

It also means that I decorate for Halloween.
I have a theory about living on the Gulf Coast.
We go nuts decorating during the fall.
We don't get to enjoy the beautiful colors of fall,
so we have to make our own!

I've had the ghost for many years .. too many to count!

Ghost

I like the old-fashioned, 50s looking, plastic decorations.
This year I added Hazel the Witch.

I'm all ready to enjoy October, Halloween and Pumpkins!

Witch and Ghost

Speaking of Pumpkins:
It is Pumpkin time at Trader Joes.
Oh, my!

Pumpkins

And, last but not least:

I admit it.
I'm hooked on Fixer Upper on HGTV.
I just keep watching no matter how many times I might have seen the episode.
This is the latest news -- they have a magazine.
It will hit the newsstands on October 11.
I'll be one of those in line!

  6. Also this year all the Jewish fall holidays are in October. When I lived where there was color October was my favorite month. Now not so much as we still have temps in 80-90 with high humidity.

  7. Your Halloween decorations are so fun! I personally don't celebrate Halloween. At the same time we have All Saints' Day in honour of the past generations. Enjoy your October.

  9. October is a busy month in our family. My oldest boy turned 21 on the 3rd. Our 22nd anniversary is on the 20th. And my youngest boy is 18 on the 26th. Plus two very good friends have birthdays this month, one of them on the 10th. :) I have some marigold seeds that I should plant now to see if I can get them to grow. It's still in the 90s here during the day (much better than 120) but I'm definitely looking forward to much cooler days, like 80 -- that would be nice. Ha!

  11. I have to admit I like 50's decorations as well, they seem rounder and cuter somehow than more modern ones. I enjoyed your post. Have a great weekend.

  13. We just don't go mad on hallowe'en here so I don't have very many ornaments like that. Your home must be very colourful when you do it.

  15. Nice to see you again, Snap!
Your Halloween looks so much fun! The ghost decoration is cute! Traditionally Halloween is not familiar to people here in Japan. I have noticed Japanese pumpkins displayed at supermarkets, they are bored these days. Love your new header!!!
    Happy weekend to you!

  18. I love October as well. However, I grew up in Marblehead, MA and live in Nahant, MA now. Both of these towns are next to Salem, MA where Halloween lives in infamy. It's crazy town there the entire month of October -and I do mean crazy town. They set up a Ferris Wheel in the center of town and it stays there the entire month! Bus loads of people come in every single day and the highways and byways are clogged from the end of September till the 1st of November.

  20. Oh,your vintage witch and ghost decorations are fabulous, love them!
I wish we could get pumpkins like the ones on sale at Trader Joe's here in France, yours are wonderful.
October is our anniversary month so obviously my favourite month, we try and get away to celebrate and tomorrow we fly to the Greek island of Rhodes.
    Happy Mosaic Monday!

  22. I agree...even thought it's not as 'cool' here as other parts of the country or the world...it's a fun time to decorate. I like lots of candles with the scents of Fall. Love your old fashioned decorations too...and your new banner! Hugs!

  23. Our granddaughter's birthday is Oct. 31, so party and Hallowe'en on the same day :) I love all the fall colours and our trees are just gorgeous. Enjoy the month.

  24. If I were to tell you that I've never seen an episode of Fixer Upper would you believe me? It's not that I don't want to, it's just that they don't broadcast here in Greece where I live. But I know the style and all the hallmarks and I know the family and even their house. And I just finished a project inspired by them. Maybe one day I'll actually get around to seeing an episode.

  25. Cooler days will be nice for you. I like decorating for fall with leaves and pumpkins and things - not so much for Halloween. October is a great month, not least because it has my birthday in it!

  26. How fun this post is....I love all your decorations...we have to make our own color here in West Texas, too...not that many trees and not much color change, either.
I want that magazine...thanks for the heads up...I'll be watching for it...and if a subscription isn't a thousand dollars, I will add one to my girl's Christmas stocking.
    xo

  28. These days, we live on the Gulf Coast (in Florida) approximately half the year and in Oregon the other half -- therefore, the only seasonal change that we really notice is now -- Summer to Fall. So I'm loving October more than I ever did when we lived (full time) here in the Pacific Northwest, as we did all our lives -- until we retired. Back then the joys of October were tempered by knowing the next season was near -- cold damp winters! (Of course I really didn't have time to worry about that until we neared retirement age and the children were all grown up) -- the cold and gray got worse as I got older ;>).

But I digress -- I really just wanted to say that I love your old-style Holiday decorations -- colorful and bring back memories.

  29. I adore those plastic lawn decorations. They remind me of my childhood. Not much fall color here until Thanksgiving. I create my own too. I'll have to pick up a copy of the magazine. I love watching Fixer Upper and loved visiting the silos in Waco. Thanks for linking to Monday Social. I would love to have you back.

We are all so busy these days. It means a lot that you dropped in to visit and left a comment. I hope you come back to visit soon.
