Nana Stamp of Approval

Mini-Daffodil in Musashi's Garden

- Last year when I went daffodil hunting in the grocery stores, I found mini-daffodils in a pot at Trader Joes. When they had bloomed themselves out I took them out of the little pot and planted them in a big pot outside. I thought if they lived, maybe they would bloom again, but really didn't expect success. Surprise! I've been watching for weeks. Lots of green, but no bloom when WOW. All of a sudden there was one blooming mini-daffodil. Too cute! More on the way! 

- Did you know that the dandelion is one of the first spring foods for our precious bees???
I have a nice crop of dandelions growing in my little garden.

- I was hoping all the rain from last week was over. Alas, that isn't true. It's been raining again and this time with thunderstorms. The kitties don't like the thunder. Can't blame them.  The trees are doing their "thing". Pollen everywhere. Cars are covered with yellow dust. Sniff, sniff, sniff.

- When the rain ends the mosquitoes will be here in abundance. UGH. I guess I needed something to complain about!

- I'm reading A DRAGON'S GUIDE TO THE CARE AND FEEDING OF HUMANS by Laurence Yep and Joanne Ryder. It should be no surprise to anyone that my grandson likes dragons almost as much as his Nana. I, of course, have to read his dragon books first in order to give the Nana stamp of approval.

This and That

Let's get this over quickly.
It's HOT and HUMID and I don't want to talk about the electric bill.

Last year I was so excited about the butterflies that were visiting Musashi's Garden.
I haven't seen many this year.
Perhaps it was the change in weather -- first cool and then HOT??
This is the only shot I've been able to get of a butterfly stopping by to visit.

This swallowtail was in the midst of fluttering wings as he took a quick taste of the duranta.

Last Saturday I made it to the Urban Harvest Farmer's Market.
What fun!
You can have breakfast there -- lots of good food available -- drinks.
Entertainment
I wanted fresh, home grown tomatoes.
There is just nothing like the taste of a home grown tomato.

Got my tomatoes and stopped by the Blue Heron Farm booth
and picked up their special of the day:
Garlic-Peppercorn Chevre.
Oh, my - Sinfully delicious!
Can't wait to hear what the special will be for tomorrow.

This and That



It's Friday.

Speaking of bunnies.
This bunny was willing to model a scarf I just finished.
I've been working through my yarn stash.
Nice to have a few extra scarves for gifts and it keeps my fingers busy.




Knit Scarf

This scarf is made from two skeins of Lion Brand Moonlight Mohair.
I used a pattern from Knit Picks that was free years ago.
It's become one of my favorites - quick and easy:

Diagonal Garter Stitch Scarf

Directions:
CO (cast on) 22 stitches.
RS: (right side) Knit into front and back of first st, knit across to last 2 sts, K2tog. 
WS: (wrong side) Knit.
Repeat these two rows until scarf is desired length.
BO (bind off) loosely and weave in ends.

I've been reading.
I've been a fan of Penman's historical novels for years and I'm always excited when a new one is published. She spends so much time doing research that she really brings the characters and time period to life. While LIONHEART is not my favorite of her novels, it was a good read. I learned a lot about going on a Crusade and much more about Richard the Lionheart and the politics of the time. 

It is an unauthorized *authorized* (my words) biography of Elizabeth II written so that it was published in time for The Queen's Diamond Jubilee. I found it fascinating and thought Smith did an excellent job covering so much information from the time Elizabeth was a young girl all the way up to the present. While she didn't interview the Queen, she had access to many others in the know. It was another book that I can say I learned a lot and came away quite impressed with the woman Elizabeth and with the queen Elizabeth. The book was also an interesting look at Prince Philip, the relationships between The Queen and *her* prime ministers, and other members of the royal family.

Every day we are swamped by tasks. Catch up on work. Buy groceries. Reply to those emails. Do the housework. Hand in that project. Pick up the dry-cleaning. Make that appointment. Go to the gym.
The constant connection to social media, as amazing and valuable as it can be, adds even more tiny tasks to our never-ending to-do-lists. Upload. Download. Tweet. Reply. Blog. Comment. Follow. Pin. Update. Check-in. Watch. Like. Read. Send.
With all these never-ending tasks consuming me all day, it’s easy to become stressed, irritable, and negative, and to forget what is most important: love, happiness, kindness, laughter, and gratitude.
YOUR MOST IMPORTANT TO-DO LIST:
1. Smile at yourself.
“Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh
How many times do you see your reflection in a day? And how many times do you see yourself actually looking happy?
Smiling at yourself can make you feel just as good as when someone else smiles at you. You smile at your friends, your family, colleagues, peers, even strangers, so why not show that same love to yourself?
2. Smile at others.
“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” ~Mother Teresa
There’s a pretty good chance that anyone you smile at will smile right back at you. (And if they don’t, keep smiling anyway!)
Whether you smile at a loved one or smile at a stranger, it’s a great happiness booster for all involved. It will leave you feeling so good about yourself that you won’t be able to wipe the smile off of your beautiful face!
3. Commit an act of kindness.
“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” ~Lao Tzu
Give up your seat on the bus. Pay for the order of the person behind you in line at Starbucks. Buy someone flowers. Give compliments. Leave a love note on a bathroom mirror or on a seat on a train or in a clothing store fitting room.
Today, with the awesomeness of social media, you can perform a kind act for a stranger without even leaving the house! A great example of this is the DropALoveBomb crew, who write supportive comments every week on the blogs of people going through a tough time.
Whatever you do, being kind to others is a win-win situation, and one kind act can often lead to another—and another, and another—creating a ripple effect of kindness and love.
4. Laugh.
“A smile starts on the lips, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the belly; but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all around.” ~Carolyn Birmingham
Everyone loves to laugh, and with all the scientific research showing just how much we benefit from it, there’s no reason not to enjoy a good giggle everyday.
Watch your favourite funny movie or sitcom, hang out with that friend who always puts you in hysterics, or search for “laughing baby” or “sneezing panda” on YouTube, and let the soulful laughs roll!
5. Say thank you.

Taking time every day to think of, or write down, everything you are grateful is an amazing way to boost your happiness and see the world in a more positive light.
Gratitude shared is even better, so say thank you to someone who helped you out.
Thank whatever higher power your heart connects with, for all the blessings in your life today, and for all the blessings that are on their way.
At the end of your day, whether you have completed all your tasks or not, if you have checked everything off this to-do list, you have succeeded.

Farm House Delivery

Farm House Delivery
I need to eat more veggies. A baseball buddy told me about Farmhouse Delivery. I could have veggies in season delivered to my front door every other week. Everything is organic, grown locally on small to medium sized farms. This is my first bushel and I'm eating well! Mustard greens, spinach, arugula, purple carrots, turnips, sweet potatoes, a head of cabbage, oranges, grapefruit and tomatoes! The tomatoes didn't last two days. They were so sweet and delicious ... just the way home grown fresh tomatoes should be. The grapefruit disappeared quickly, too. I am enjoying the greens and am going to try the Arugula And Pasta recipe on the Farmhouse website. That's the other thing that I like. Farmhouse provides hints on how to store the veggies and lots of recipes to try.

Arugula Pasta with Bacon and Parmesan


1 pound fettucine or spaghetti
1/4 c. chopped green garlic
1 strip bacon, cut into 1/2" pieces
1/4 c. grated parmesan
2 c. arugula
olive oil

Saute bacon in small skillet and cook till just done; place in large bowl with arugula. Use same skillet to saute green garlic and add to bowl with grated parmesan. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook pasta to al dente. Drain and reserve 1/2 c. pasta cooking water. Add pasta and water to bowl with arugula and toss all together. Season wit salt and pepper. Easy!!

But veggies aren't the only things available at Farmhouse. I can order dairy products, grass fed beef, lamb, pork, chickens, eggs, bread, desserts! Oh, my! I'll be sticking to veggies while I find my way around Farmhouse.

Postcard Friendship Friday

Postcard Friendship Friday is brought to us by our wonderful Postmistress, Marie.

We have friends who traveled to France this last September.
They sent us this beautiful postcard.



Notre Dame Cathedral is certainly impressive.
But it was the message on the back that got a few smiles from us.



The back reads:
"Paris is amazing -- the fresh bread, the cheese, the
... wait, who am I kidding ... the wine!
Maybe I can convince the bosses, Bentley and Mathilda,
to let Bulldog Postal have a Bordeaux Happy Hour!"

Postcard Friendship Friday

A big thank you to our postmistress, Marie for putting Postcard Friendship Friday together.

One of my sisters-by-choice, is a Jamestown, New York girl. She spent several weeks there recently and sent me these postcards. We lovingly call ourselves Lucy and Ethel (she's Lucy and I'm Ethel). Not only do I enjoy Lucy and the gang from the television show (always good for a laugh), but I Love *MY* Lucy.



This post card is called The Nursery School.
The back of the card reads
Nursery School (aired December 5, 1955).




On the front, this card reads "The story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz all began here in Jamestown, New York, where Lucy was born on August 6, 1911. When Lucille Ball was very young, this is where she lived, saw her first vaudeville, dreamed of an acting career and stared in her first high school play. Later, when she had met and married Desi Arnaz and I Love Lucy was a remarkable success, Lucille Ball never forgot Jamestown. She came back often and remained close to her family and friends. We welcome them back now to relive their true story."

The back of the card reads: "The Lucy-Desi Museum, Jamestown, New York whose mission is to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and enrich the world through the healing powers of love and laughter."

at Incline Village, Nevada.
I love the view of Lake Tahoe in the background.

This area today, with City Hall (on the right), is in a park area known as Market Square.
Many events are held near and around Market Square including the Bayou City Art Festival (coming up in October).

Mail Call

A month or so ago, Karen Harvey Cox had a give-a-way on her blog, the beautiful Scrapbook of Inspiration. The winner received a custom water color painting by Karen. You can go here to see the winner's painting. It is amazing.

Karen decided that everyone who entered the give-a-way should receive a gift from her -- a miniature water color of their favorite flower! Picking my favorite flower was the hardest part. I finally decided on the pansy because of their happy little faces and wonderful color.

My pot of pansies has arrived. What a mail call! Karen is talented, generous and sure knows how to spread the joy around!

Unfinished Business

Mr. Dragon finally photographed his art work from this summer. These are my favorites from that photo session and the ones that were too big for me to scan.

Look what I got yesterday! Two awards at one time from the lovely and talented Shelly, the Blue Ridge Lady. Thank you, Shelly. I'll try to continue with the *variety feast*!



You must go and visit Shelly. She has been collaging for a little over a year -- bright, beautiful, fun collages. She also does some beaded jewelry and she is a cat lover. It's always hard to hand the awards off to other blogs. There are just too many blogs that make me smile. So, if you don't already have these awards, would like them, or need to make yourself smile -- please grab an award with my blessing and a big YeeeeeHaaawww!

Last, but not least, the Julie and Julia articles at the New York Times continue today with a marvelous post by Michael Pollan whose latest book is In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto.

Wrecking Week 5

It's week 5 of Wreck This Journal at The Next Chapter book blogging group. I took last week off and found myself doing things like cleaning closets. So, maybe, Jamie, this wrecking is leading to other things around the house!



For this week I had a great time with the pencil poking holes in the page. Just poking the hole wasn't enough. I had to force the pencil all the way through the page. I had a great time and wrinkled the page a bit, too.




Tearing strips was great, too. Both of these exercises were active and I thought I should tear up another page and poke more holes!


I've been looking at the back of the journal. It says to tape the journal up and mail it to yourself. I thought I'd better do that before there wasn't enough of a journal left to tape up and mail. So, that's what I'm doing tomorrow, off to the post. I'll let you know when the journal returns home.

Wreck This Journal Week 3

This is week three in The Next Chapter book group and we are Wrecking a journal.

The wrecking seems to get easier with each passing week.

Or, maybe I'm just getting into it.

Mr. Dragon is even asking if there is any journal wrecking to be done today!
We've had several discussions about *turning loose* -
not being so left brained.
Relax. Enjoy. Be a kid and see where it leads us in our art/craft etc.





I followed directions and lost this page. Here it is almost torn out. I *lost* it on the running trail at Rice, but forgot to take the camera. I'm sure someone will pick it up and deliver it somewhere. Bye, Bye black page!




Burning the page was fun.
I hung the page over the kitchen sink with the water running and let it burn, burn, burn
and didn't set off the smoke alarm!
The ash started a nice mess on the next page.
A few pages near by are a little wrinkled from the water.
Success!!
