I love this little poem.
The words are just as true in January as December.
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.
"We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,"
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
–Oliver Herford (1863–1935)
The robins, cardinals, jays, doves and sparrows have been busy singing.
Thanking me for putting extra food out for them on these cold days.
I thought the cold winter days could use a little cheer.
Cassie helping me with this little still life,
Yellow is such a happy color!
Meanwhile, my tree is still up.
It's hard to take it down.
It's so pretty and twinkly -- everyone needs more twinkly!
The snowmen will have a place of honor throughout the month of January.
It is winter -- even on the Gulf Coast.
Wishing YOU well and much joy in this new year!

Loved your post and especially the poem. I may print it and hang it where it can be read as we continue on with winter. :)Today the temps have risen but I know that is just a tease for we Canadians. Enjoy the winter days and maybe keep up your twinkly lights.
ReplyDeleteAwesome poem!
ReplyDeleteA lovely post as the first week of the New Year is already past! You photographed two of my favorite birds. We do get robins here in summer, but I've never seen a cardinal at my high altitude. I put my holiday decorations away today, but I kept a little crystal snowman sitting on my kitchen windowsill. Happy 2018, Snap!
ReplyDeleteThe poem is beautiful. And I really am wild about the glorious photos in this post -- the beautiful birds and that fabulous yellow bloom. Really exquisite. What a lovely way to get up!
ReplyDeleteSome of my trees are still up but coming down, slow but sure and sadly. I'll leave the winter tree up a bit longer. Santas are down and when I get another tree or two down, snowmen will be up. I see enough snow when I look out the window!
Hi, for some reason your kind comment to me didn't make it to my inbox, I just saw it on the post. Don't know why that would happen!. That is a great poem. I love incorporating poems and quotes into my blog. Your pics of the birds are beautiful and just love the one of flowers and your cute kitty. I do the same as you during the month of January with my collection of snowmen. The house doesn't seem so bare after the Christmas is put away. Although, I am confessing that my tree is still up also! I just can't bare to put it away this year for some reason. Thank you again for your lovely comments and please visit again anytime..Happy Wednesday..Judy
ReplyDeleteI love your poem - it's lovely. Spring is my favorite time of year and thinking of it always makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. We do need more twinkly. Your snowmen are adorable. Thanks for linking up to Keep In Touch.
ReplyDeleteI love that sweet poem! I am always thrilled when I see the return of the Robin. Counting the days till spring. Your snowmen are cute! Mine will stay out till the last week of January. Then I will pull out the Valentines décor. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Perfect poem for your post -- or, to put it another way, your beautiful photos are perfect illustrations for the poem!
