The Houston Zoo's gorillas
are all western lowland gorillas.
All of them were born and raised in American zoos.
The Red River hogs are named for their striking red hair
and their ability to wade and swim in rivers.
The long white tufts on the tips of their ears are called tassels.

ReplyDeleteThe Houston zoo exhibits when I was a child were mostly just cages, though I remember the seals having a large pool surrounded by a fence where my sister managed to cut her knee on the metal. I'm glad to hear they are buiding natural exhibits for the animals. The red river hogs are really cute, I love the color and the facial markings that look a little like a mask.

Sounds like an interesting zoo. I've never seen (or heard of) a red river hog. How fun to have those signs to tell people which gorilla is who and how to tell them apart.
ReplyDeleteahhh, we just love going to zoos. We took our kids every chance we got..and then, the grands. I love the monkeys and gorillas. They are so human looking..lol

The Red River Hog is new to me too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like good habitat. And zoos and care of these amazing animals has certainly improved over the (many) decades I've been alive. I just hope their cousins still in the wild can survive.
