A Happy Halloween

Source: flickr.com via Snap on Pinterest

A Hallowe'en merry, a Hallowe'en bright,
Though pumpkins make faces
and ghosts walk at night,
Let no noises scare you, and don't start to run,
For 'tis but a joke, and Hallowe'en fun.

From the back of the postcard:
Ellen Clapsaddle, Postcard, N.D.

There is quite a bit of information online about Ellen Clapsaddle.
Here's just a tidbit.

"Clapsaddle's illustrations are favorites of many, and she published more than three thousand signed postcards and designed countless more unsigned pictures.  Over half of her illustrations are of children, and the rest are more general scenes.  She was born the year the Civil War ended, an only child, attended a country school and graduated from Richfield Springs Seminary, New York, in 1882.  A self-taught artist, she gave private painting lessons until she attended Cooper Institute in New York City. There, she contracted to work for the International Art Company (IAC), and relocated to Germany to design articles as diverse as porcelain, calendars and greeting cards.  She returned to the U.S. in 1906 to become principal artist for the Wolf Company, a subsidiary of IAC.

She was a very prolific artist, and her designs reflect the entire spectrum of seasonal and holiday themes, drawing upon folklore, traditions, games and nursery rhymes.  Unlike other artists whose illustrations were adapted for postcards, Clapsaddle designed specifically for the medium.

During the height of her career with IAC, she invested her earnings in the booming German postcard industry. While on a business trip to Germany in August of 1914, World War I broke out.  In the confusion and destruction, Clapsaddle became stranded and ultimately destitute.  One of the Wolf Company partners went to Germany and, after a six month search, found her in poor health.  She returned safely to the U.S., but her health declined and she lost the ability to work. She died thirteen years later at the Peabody Home in New York. "

Is it cool yet?

As you can tell, the sun is shining here.
We set heat records every day and
I'm getting tired of the weather!
So, in an effort to feel cooler,
I finished this little scarecrow.

Crochet Scarecrow and Pumpkin

The little scarecrow was easy to crochet.
He's lots of fun.
The design is by Sheila Leslie for Crochet World/DRG.
I purchased him as a kit from Mary Maxim.

Crochet Scarecrow

And, NO, I don't feel cooler.
But I am smiling!

Wishing YOU well and joy filled day!

For those who might be interested, I found a pattern for
a scarecrow online that is very similar to the one I made.

Postcard Friendship Friday

One more Halloween postcard from the New York Public Library digital collection.

Let's see what she sees in the mirror this time!

"The maiden fair had a most romantic soul,
And wished her future husband to behold.
She gazed in the mirror and one glance took-
And beheld her brother kissing the cook.

Hallow'een Greeting."

You'll see a variety of postcards there.

Wishing you well, a JOY filled weekend, and a spooky, treat filled HALLOWEEN!

Tea Tuesday

I'm sitting here with my tea and Halloween decorations
listening to Mannheim Steamroller's HALLOWEEN.
I love Chip Davis and Mannheim Steamroller and had no idea he had a Halloween CD.
Where have I been?! What fun!

I've been thinking about Spiced Tea.
It's just about time, don't you think?
I know, it's still 90 degrees here, but sooner or later it will cool down
and spiced tea sounds good to me.

Do you have a recipe for spice tea?
I was looking for mine (with Tang ... do they still make Tang?!) and couldn't find it.
So, I googled on Spice Tea and the first recipe that came up was from the Hillbilly Housewife!
Really! Here's her recipe:
  • 2 to 3 cups of sugar (depending on your sweet tooth)
  • 2 packets orange kool-aid mix
  • 1 or 2 packets lemon kool-aid mix (depending on your sour tooth)
  • 1/2 cup instant tea
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Get out a large dry bowl. Measure the sugar into the bowl. Open up the kool-aid packets and add them to the sugar. Stir well with a wire whisk or a clean dry fork. Add the instant tea, cinnamon and cloves. Stir again to mix well. This makes about 4 3/4 cups of mix. Store it in a well sealed container.
To Prepare: Combine a tablespoon of Spiced Tea Mix with hot water in a cup or mug. Stir to dissolve. Serve hot.
Be sure to use the small fruit flavored soft drink (kool-aid) packets, the ones without any sugar added. I buy an off brand at 10 for a dollar. The name brand ones are about a quarter each. Regular recipes for Russian, or Spiced tea usually call for lemonade mix and Tang. I developed this recipe using the same flavors, but without the higher priced, sugar added, mixes. Use your own sugar, and save a bundle. This mix may be packaged in small plastic bags and given out as a gift at Christmas. Be sure to include instructions on how to prepare it.
Note: I prepare this recipe with 4 cups of sugar and 2 packets of lemonade mix which makes it very sweet. When I make a cup of it for myself I add a large dash of bottled lemon juice for flavor and tang. The rest of my family prefers the tea plain and sweet. I note this for reasons other lemon lovers will understand, especially if they have been subjected to over sweetened lemon concoctions as often as I. The extra dash of lemon juice gives this beverage just the right amount of “pucker”. It tastes especially good on a sore throat.

Chip Davis and Mannheim Steamroller HALLOWEEN

I found another recipe that looks what I remember mine to be:

Spiced Tea Mix
1 1/2 cups instant tea powder
2 cups orange flavored instant breakfast powder
1 (3-ounce) package lemonade mix
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  1. Combine all ingredients until well blended. Store mix in an airtight container.
  2. To make 1 cup of spiced tea: Place 2 teaspoons tea mix in a cup, add boiling water, stir and enjoy!
Makes 64 servings or 3 1/2 cups mix.

I'd love to know if you have a recipe for spice tea! There are so many tea parties on Tuesday and not enough time! Teacup Tuesday is hosted by Martha and Terri.

There are four major tea types - black, oolong, green and white.
Black tea undergoes the longest process of oxidation.
Wishing you well, a JOY filled day, and a wonderful cup of tea!

Mosaic Monday: Halloween In the Neighborhood

It's the last Mosaic Monday before Halloween so I decided to take another walk around the neighborhood, camera around my neck.

I really liked this house, with the large skull above the entrance,
the black wreath with the smaller skulls on the door,
and the wonderful ghostie ghoulie in the tree!

The BOO ghosts brought a smile to my face
and I thought the hanging ghosts over the door were very clever.

I do love cats!

But I think the ghosts win!

Mwahhahahahahahha!

Mosaic Monday is hosted by the lovely Mary.
When you visit you'll see a variety of mosaics:
each different and each with its own story to tell.

Wishing you well and a JOY filled week!

Postcard Friendship Friday

Here is another Halloween postcard from the New York Public Library digital collection.

This one is about precautions to take on Halloween.

Hallowe'en Precautions

If you take ten seeds
From A pumpkin shell
And go to the woods
Where the witches dwell
Plant then in front of the door in A cross
You will be rid of them
Without remorse

Postcard Friendship Friday

There are five Friday's in October.
That's a good thing, because I've really enjoyed this series of postcards from

I laughed out loud when I saw this one and I hope you do, too!

(Image from the New York Public Library)

"She was filled with romance, and deemed it good sport
To look in the mirror and see it's report.
She gazed quite awhile, then a loud voice heard;
'Come do the dishes now, and don't be absurd.'"

Hollow'een Greeting.

Mosaic Monday: A Walk Around the Block

I thought I'd take you on a walk around my block.
It's still a wee bit early, but the Halloween decorations are coming out.

(Love the bones on the wreath and the black birds.)

I have a theory about Halloween decorations.
I believe people down here (where it is hot 9 months out of the year),
pull out all the decorating stops when the Fall arrives.
We don't have the wonderful color of the changing of the leaves.

But we can sure decorate starting at Halloween!

Mosaic Monday is hosted by the lovely Mary.
Each mosaic is different and each has its own story to tell.

Wishing you well and a JOY filled week!

Mosaic Monday

One of my best buddies is an art teacher.
Every now and then we have a play day.
She tries out new techniques on me or shows me things she has recently learned.
Sometimes I help do the backgrounds for a project she has coming up in class.
Last week we got together.
The piece I'm working on is 24" x 24" -- larger than I usually work.
When it is finished it folds to make a book.

Mixed Media Mosaic

I have a long way to go before it is finished.
More paint, Caran deArche watersoluble pastels, more stamps, more texture.
The black and white areas need to be colored in.
I need to work on some of the transparencies that didn't get gelled down completely.
You get the idea.
If you look carefully, you can see some of the wonderful texture that is beginning to pop out.

Mixed Media

Last week I showed you some crochet I'm working on.
Here is the pumpkin block all finished except for the row of black squares that goes all the way around.
The shadow on the right side -- Miss Cassie was checking out HER new blanket.
Wondering if it would be finished in time for Halloween.

The lovely Mary is the hostess for Mosaic Monday.
Each mosaic is different. Each has a story to tell.

***
Snippets:

- The washing machine died on Sunday. One load of wash to finish. We put a makeshift clothesline in the garage and hung all the wet things. Mr. Dragon says the washer needs a new transmission. (Who knew a washing machine had a transmission?!!!) Since China bought Maytag, Maytag just isn't the same.
I think we will try to have it repaired and see what happens before we take the plunge and buy something new.

- Busy week coming up. My turn at the doctor appointments. Monday I see my eye guy. Wednesday I go in for the lab work for the appointment I have with the internist the following week.

- Last week we took little Riley to the vet for her cardiac exam. The vet who does the ultrasound on her is reported to have said "I don't know why this cat is still alive."!!!! Our vet tweaked her meds and home she came. She's in no pain and seems to enjoy watching Teddy and Cassie. We will carry on.

- The weather guys are promising us a cool front. Nothing yet, but I'll continue to hope!

Wishing you well and a JOY filled week!

Mosaic Monday

In the spirit of Fall and Halloween, I have been crocheting.
 All these little squares:
some in solid colors and some in two colors.

Then I started to put them all together.

Do you think I'll finish?

I can only work when SHE is asleep!

Mosaic Monday is hosted by the lovely Mary.
Each mosaic is different. Each a story to tell.

Wishing you well and a wonderful week full of JOY!

Mosaic Monday

Autumn begins on September 22.
You'd never know it here at Twisty Lane.
The temperatures are still in the mid to high nineties with feels like temps in the 100's.
We are getting tired of it -- to put it mildly.
But I have hope.

And it's what I've been finding in the grocery and book stores that has me thinking that Fall may indeed be just around the corner.
Magazines announcing Halloween!!!
Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Lady, Gooseberry Patch, Country Living

They are all filled with beautiful images of Fall.
Pumpkins, gourds, leaves, beautiful oranges, reds, browns and greens.

EEK!
Let's not forget the wonderful crafts and recipes.
My mouth is watering and my fingers are itching!

I'm ready!!!
Won't you join me?
Grab a cup of tea, a stack of magazines, and dream of Fall.

Mosaic Monday is hosted by the lovely Mary.
Each mosaic is different. Each has a story to tell.
You'll enjoy your visit!

Wishing you well and a week filled with JOY!

Camera Critters

It's Camera Critters time and
it's Halloween.

That calls for a special post.
It's back to the Houston Zoo photography day.
It rained lightly all morning.
I met this gentleman early that day and thought
Halloween!

CINEREOUS VULTURE
(EUROPEAN BLACK VULTURE)

A large bird, the cinereous vulture can measure more than three feet in height and has a wingspan that can extend up to ten feet. Cinereous vultures have dark brown feathers with a dull blue head, neck and bill.

Their status is seriously threatened globally due to hunting, poisoning, habitat destruction and improved stock management. The international trade of this species is regulated by law, since it may become endangered without regulated trade.

These vultures build their nests in trees and on cliffs high above the ground, using sticks and twigs as building materials. Males and females cooperate in rearing young.

This particular vulture was hatched in captivity in a special breeding program. The Houston Zoo is well known for its amazing birds, many of which are never on display -- behind the scenes in special breeding programs in an attempt to maintain the particular species.

If you enlarge on the photos, you'll see this bird liked the rain!

Happy Halloween

Be sure to check out other critters at Camera Critters!

Postcard Friendship Friday

Postcard Friendship Friday is hosted every week by our lovely postmistress, Marie.

I wanted to come up with something special for Halloween.
I found a collection of postcards called
Famous Painted Cats.
It was published by Ten Speed Press in 2004
and has 24 postcards.

I picked three of my favorites that said Halloween to me.

This is Bone Voyage, 2000, vegetable dye and neutralized bleach on Bruno, tabby and white shorthair moggy. T. Yates, SanFrancisco.

The back of the postcard reads: "Zeno Baron's work conforms to Braque's requirement that art should disturb, to say nothing of making you jump out of your skin. It was once described by a critic as being "...on the teasing edge of macabre with an increasing tendency to fall right off." But Baron refutes such detractors by saying they're "shallow," and "afraid to engage with the inner message."

Miss Chatreuse, 2001, Vegetable dye on Stella, white moggy. P. Knight, Toledo.

The back of the postcard reads: "Robert Geldzahlor's cats are designed to be a celebration of female night sports with all the glitzy jewelry, makeup, and weapons of mass seduction beautifully painted on their silken attire. They preen, they gossip, they stalk their prey, and provide a vivid reminder of the animal that lurks within us all."

Heavenly Bodies, 2001. Organic peroxide on Blackie and Patch, black and white moggies. D. McGill, Edinburgh.

The back of the postcard reads: "Kate Bishop works quickly using stencils and an electrostatic airbrush, to position images at the correct height so they can interact with images on other cats. As the cats move about in a confined, space, the images merge, becoming partially obscured and transformed in a vast orchestration of rapidly changing random forms, each one representing the sum of its infinite possibilities. This work has been described as representing a significant advance in the celestial-bestial chromosphere."

From the back of the book: "Cat painting, once the preserve of a few Midwest American artists, is becoming so mainstream that it's possible to see a cat being styled and painted in a specialized beauty salon or competing for "Best Painted Cat" at a pet show. In other cultures it's not so new. people paint their cats in India and Japan and if you traveled to Ayuba, an independent territry of Botswana in the Okavango Delta, you would find the local Bayeyi people using bark dyes to paaint butterflies on their cats' faces."

The one thing I know for sure, I've never lived with a cat who would stand for being painted. Having a portrait done is one thing, but actually being painted -- NO WAY!

I hope you all have a Happy Halloween.
Happy PFF!
