Crush

For several years,
Susannah Conway has had what she calls August Break.
It's a break from the usual blogging routine.
My buddy, Meri at Meri's Musings is participating this year
and reminded me that this IS a fun way to have a break.
You can get as carried away with the prompts as you want ...
or not.

The prompt for today is CRUSH.

That led me immediately to the Houston Astros
and Orange Crush (also an drink).

I found all the images on line except for this one.

Trophy Time

Yep, that's me in my Astros Orange Crush World Series T-shirt
with the World Series Trophy and
the College World Series Trophy from 2003 won by the Rice Owls.

That's my August Break for the day!

This and That

It was one of those "this and that" weeks.
Heat records have been set all week.
It's not even UGHust!

The last Rice U baseball home series has come and gone.
I found these at the grocery and thought they'd be fun at the tailgate.
They were!

Mother's Day with the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
I do love Orbit and all his shenanigans.
He must be one of the best major league baseball mascots.

This and That

I've been home nursing my bad back
and trying not to sit for any length of time ...
that means no blog posts.

So, I decided it was time to do a This and That post
adding a little bit every few days.

*

(Karen from Houston Chronicle)

I think I've watched the Mike Friers No-No game three times.
Friday night when it happened,
early Saturday morning rerun
and the Saturday afternoon rerun.
Mike came from the Brewers to the Astros in a trade.
This was his first complete game and
the first No Hitter in Minute Maid Park.
Exciting each time I watched.

**

I participated in the Index Card A Day challenge again this summer.
However, I didn't do 61 cards this year.
I simply ran out of steam and the back didn't help.

I thought I'd share a few of my favorites starting with cats.

Then collage....

I took my time.
Didn't rush and completed 34 cards.

So, if I wasn't being arty, and I wasn't reading..
what have I been doing???
Crocheting!
On these hot, miserable days I didn't want to go out.
So I decided if I was going make things for the holidays,
now was a good time to get busy!

Crochet

I liked the pattern and the cowl looked quick and easy (it is).

I picked two color ways -- Ocean Waves and Desert Sands --
and will have enough yarn to make several cowls.
I always keep the first one for myself.
It has all the mistakes I make while I'm figuring out the pattern!
I really didn't like this yarn (Lion Brand Textures) when I started.
It was difficult to see the loops and where to put the next stitch.
But, by the time I was finished with the first one, I was moving right along
and liking the result.

Cowl

This is the Ocean Waves color way and the first one I made (mine!).

Crochet Cowls

And this is the Desert Sands on the right.
It has a Southwest feel.
I have a new cowl and one made for a gift.
Moving right along!

Wishing YOU well and much joy.

I'm joining the lovely Judith for Mosaic Monday.

My World

Be sure to visit My World to see more of our world or to participate yourself.

I think I've mentioned before that we are baseball lovers.

I'm going to take you back to the end of September
and the last game of the season (for us) with the Astros.

It was a beautiful day and the roof was open!

We are huge college baseball fans
and get a real charge seeing *our* boys play in the major leagues.
Here's Lance Berkman (first baseman for the Astros)
with Paul Janish (short stop for the Cincinnati Reds).
Both of them played for Rice U Owls.
Lance was the college baseball player of the year.
Paul was on the 2003 team that won the college world series.
I wonder what they were talking about? !!!!!

It was Friday night and the last fireworks of the season.

Have a wonderful week!

My World

It's Time for My World.

Go visit the My World site to see more of our world or, even better, to participate yourself!

I was trying to decide what pictures I would share with you about My World. I was watching the Home Run Derby, part of the Baseball All-Star Game and decided that I would show you my two favorite baseball parks in Houston.

This is the scoreboard at Minute Maid Stadium, home of the Houston Astros. The Minute Maid corporate offices are located in Houston and they paid for the naming rights to the stadium. The stadium is built on the grounds of the old Union Station and is attached to part of the old Station building. That's why you see a lot of railroad trains around the park.

The roof opens and closes. Good thing in this horrible heat. No one would be able to play if it was open. You can see the shadows the window and roof cast on the field. Makes fielding interesting sometimes.

Batting practice at Minute Maid.

Here's my other favorite park, Reckling Park home of the Rice University Owls. These pictures were taken during Fall Ball last year. Scoreboard first.

The Owls have been quite successful -- scholar athletes. They take their studies seriously along with their baseball.

We do enjoy baseball!
