One of the joys of walking in Hermann Park is watching the ducks,
especially my favorites, the Black Bellied Whistling Ducks.
They are so un-ducklike!
They have long legs.
And, they whistle.
Really.
They are so much fun to listen to ... especially when they are eating.
They make me smile and it's hard to beat a smile!
This fella took off just as I clicked.

I don't think I have ever heard or heard of a whistling duck. I've been exposed strictly to quackers. But yes, you can't beat a smile, can you?

I love ducks!! We used to live on a piece of property that was right on a man made lake. The lake was full of ducks....one morning we went out back and there were three ducks floating in our swimming pool...I'll never forget that sight. LOL LOL

I agree! I love watching them too, especially when they hop out of the water and spend an eternity plucking dry each and every feather and then just hop back in as if that effort was fun.

Hi Snap, what great photos! I have only recently discovered the Whistling Duck, well two years ago really when on a holiday in San Diego when we went to the zoo. So sweet and they certainly do whistle!

their geeks are so beautiful and pinky. I don't think I have ever heard one. Our ladies quack but have all kinds of interesting tiny noises they make and Mr. Lucky just cronks, not much noise at all. I would love to see these guys. xox Corrine

I've never heard of whistling ducks before either. Do they really whistle?
I saw some of these on TexWisGirl's blog a while back, but I've never seen them here in Southeast Missouri... They're too cute & I'd love to hear their whistle! =)

Whistling ducks are new to me. And how beautiful is that shot of the duck taking off in flight.
They are such elegant looking ducks. I have never seen any like this, nor heard any duck here in New England whistle. Such an enchanting thing.

I love ducks - there's always a flock at Pondside, and we're regular hosts to migrant wild ducks. I've never heard of whistling ducks, but I'd love to hear one. They certainly are different-looking, except on the water, where they are quite duck-like!
I've heard that if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck. Never heard about a whistle. How fun! Your photos are just ducky! I know, I know. lol!
