Relying on Others

I wanted to share this Daily OM with you today. It speaks to what is happening in my life. I am so very grateful to my friends who have offered their support. Mr. Dragon has had a rough week with long days, but he is doing much better now. It was so nice to come home today to the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen -- two meals awaited us -- one in the refrigerator and one in a slow cooker. We'll be eating well for the rest of the week and the weekend. Be willing to say HELP. Be willing to rely on others and be sure to thank them. Gratitude-- a wonderful feeling.

The Wisdom of Surrender
Relying on Others

Most of us pride ourselves on our self-sufficiency. We like to be responsible for taking care of ourselves and pulling our own weight in the world. This is why it can be so challenging when we find ourselves in a situation in which we have to rely on someone else. This can happen as the result of an illness or an injury, or even in the case of a positive change, such as the arrival of a newborn. At times like these, it is essential that we let go of our feeling that we should be able to do it all by ourselves and accept the help of others.

The first step is accepting the situation fully as it is. Too often we make things worse either by trying to do more than we should or by lapsing into feelings of uselessness. In both cases we run the risk of actually prolonging our dependency. In addition, we miss a valuable opportunity to practice acceptance and humility. The ego resists what is, so when we move into acceptance we move into the deeper realm of the soul. In needing others and allowing them to help us, we experience the full realization that we are not on our own in the world. While this may bring up feelings of vulnerability, a deep feeling of gratitude may also emerge as we open to the experience of being helped. This realization can enable us to be wiser in our service of others when we are called upon to help.

It takes wisdom and strength to surrender to our own helplessness and to accept that we, just like every other human being, have limitations. The gifts of surrender are numerous. We discover humility, gratitude, and a deepening understanding of the human experience that enables us to be that much more compassionate and surrendered in the world.

I too receive the Daily Om in my email box and look forward to it each day! Today's message was indeed a good one, it is so easy for us to give help but difficult to ask for.

I'm so sorry to hear Mr Dragon had such a rough week. I hope things will be better soon. It sounds as if your friends are assisting you in many ways....and your Daily Om message is so true. We all need a little help now and then and we need to be strong enough to accept it. My thoughts are with you both.

Oh yes. We so often think we can or have to do things on our own. And yet we are the first to run and offer help when someone else is in need. Why can't we easily say "yes" to help offered? I wish I knew the answer to that one. Take every bit offered and don't be afraid to ask for more. I wish I was closer geographically to do some things for you. If you can learn to let people in and take care of both of you, it will be an easier ride. I love synchronicity.

Accepting help is so hard to do sometimes, but its a relief when we can finally say yes to help.

I'm praying for Mr. Dragon and you!

Oh Snap---this made me think of a recent experience we had with George's elderly parents. They have always been so independent and have never relied on others for any help. Now--that both of them are legally blind, they HAVE to count on others to help them.

Recently, a group of young adults from their church went to their house to help them --with yard work, house work, etc... Dad Adams sent them home --saying that they didn't need any help. WELL---George and sister Janet had a FIT.. Those two need all the help they can get --and need to accept it graciously....

Please pray for them--and for us (in dealing with their needs)...
Hugs,
Betsy

Forgot to say that I'm glad that you two are now home --and that Mr. Dragon can relax and enjoy being at home for awhile. Glad you have the needed help--and are 'accepting' it!!!!

Prayers and Hugs,
Betsy

Hugs to you and Mr. Dragon. Sorry it was such a rough week. Friends can be amazing and so loving, the same happened for my Dad and me when my Mom was ill. We have to be thankful every day and surrender to other's hands even when we don't think we need to.

Positive thoughts and prayers go out to you both.

We are all in this together and we cannot do it alone. So glad that you have the wisdom to know that, lovely Snap, and that the help has come to get you and Mr. Dragon through. Hmmm, I can just imagine how nourishing that food was to you both.
May the weekend be peace-filled...
Big love to you.

Everyone seems to have said the important things already. I'm so glad you have friends who can help you in tough times, and that you are willing to ask for help. So often, we are trained to be independent and to ask for help is a weakness. So NOT true. I think to be able to ask for help is a sign of strength and implies a great deal of trust on your part that those friends will surely come through for you.

I, too, hope you have a smoother road ahead and that Mr D has an easier time soon.

{{{hugs!}}}
